Patch Backing Options: Choosing How It Attaches
The backing is usually decided last and is the thing most likely to cause a complaint six months later. It determines whether your patch is still attached after fifty washes.
Sew-on
The default, and the right answer more often than people want it to be. The patch is stitched through its border into the garment.
Strengths: the most durable option by a distance. Survives industrial laundering, heat, abrasion and years of wear. Works on every fabric, including ones that reject adhesive entirely — nylon, waterproof shells, leather, heavy canvas. It is also the only sensible choice for heavy patches like chenille.
Trade-off: attachment takes labour, and it is effectively permanent. Removing it leaves needle holes.
Use for: workwear, uniforms, letterman jackets, anything washed regularly, anything expensive.
Iron-on (heat seal)
A heat-activated adhesive film on the back. Applied with an iron or heat press.
Strengths: fast, no sewing skill needed, ideal for one-offs and consumer-applied patches.
Trade-offs — and these matter: it needs cotton or a cotton-rich blend that tolerates high heat. It will not bond reliably to nylon, polyester performance fabrics, waterproof membranes, leather or anything stretchy. Even on cotton, repeated hot washing gradually breaks the bond, usually starting at a corner.
The honest professional position: iron-on is a convenience feature, not a durability feature. Many suppliers apply iron-on backing and recommend stitching the edge for anything that will be worn hard. More detail in iron-on versus sew-on.
Use for: cotton tees and totes, personal items, temporary or low-wear applications.
Velcro (hook and loop)
Hook material on the patch, loop panel on the garment (or vice versa).
Strengths: swappable. This is the whole point. Change a name, a rank, a role, a shift, or remove insignia before laundering. One garment serves many configurations.
Trade-offs: you need a loop panel on the garment, which is either built in or must be sewn on. The connection adds bulk and stiffness, and hook material collects lint and can snag adjacent fabrics.
Use for: tactical and military gear, emergency services, security, contractors moving between sites, anything where the badge changes more often than the jacket.
Adhesive (peel and stick)
A pressure-sensitive sticker back.
Strengths: instant, no tools, no heat.
Trade-offs: genuinely temporary. It will not survive washing and often not a full day of movement. Treat it as a display or event backing.
Use for: trade show samples, conference badges, packaging, short-term promotional use. Not clothing you intend to keep.
Magnetic
A magnet in the patch and a counterpart behind the fabric.
Strengths: no holes at all — the reason it exists. Good for expensive suiting, silk, or anything you refuse to perforate.
Trade-offs: only works on thin fabric, adds noticeable weight and cost, can be dislodged by a knock, and needs care around cards and devices.
Use for: name badges on business attire, hospitality front-of-house, retail.

Choosing quickly
Washed regularly or worn hard? Sew-on. Needs to change? Velcro. Cotton item, light use, applied by the customer? Iron-on. Event or display only? Adhesive. Cannot put a hole in it? Magnetic.
