    How to Open a DST File (and What You Can Actually Edit)

    Someone sends you a DST and you cannot open it. Your computer has no idea what it is, and the usual design apps will not touch it. Here is what a DST actually is, how to look inside one, and where editing stops being possible.

    Why nothing on your computer opens it

    A DST is not an image. It contains no colours, no shapes and no layers — just a long list of needle movements and commands: move here, stitch, jump, change thread, stop. It was created by Tajima for industrial embroidery machines and it has stayed the industry standard because almost every machine reads it.

    That is also why Photoshop, Illustrator and your photo viewer are useless here. There is nothing for them to render. More background in what a DST file is.

    Free ways to view one

    Wilcom TrueSizer is the closest thing to a standard. It is free, opens DST and most other formats, shows stitch count, thread changes and dimensions, and lets you print a preview. There is a browser version and a desktop version.

    My Editor (Wings) is another free viewer with basic editing — recolour, resize within limits, and export to other formats.

    Embrilliance Express is free and handles viewing plus simple operations, with paid modules if you need more.

    Your embroidery machine's own software will also open it, though usually with fewer inspection tools.

    What "editing" a DST actually means

    This is where expectations need managing. Because a DST stores finished stitch coordinates rather than editable objects, the things you can safely change are limited:

    You can: change thread colours, rotate, mirror, reposition, combine with another design, adjust the start point, and rescale by a small amount.

    You cannot, in any meaningful way: change the shape of an element, swap the typeface, redraw the logo, alter stitch direction, or fix underlay. Those decisions were baked in when the file was digitized.

    Think of it like a printed photograph versus the negative. You can crop and tint the print. You cannot move the furniture in the room.

    The resizing trap

    Every viewer will let you drag a DST bigger. It will look fine on screen and sew badly.

    Density is fixed at creation. Scale up 50% and the same number of stitches now has to cover more than double the area, so fabric shows through in gaps. Scale down 50% and stitches pile on top of each other, producing a stiff, puckered patch that breaks needles.

    The practical rule: ±10–20% is usually safe. Beyond that, get it re-digitized at the new size. Proper software can recalculate density on resize, but only if it has the original object data — which a plain DST does not carry.

    What software genuinely edits stitch files

    Real editing needs digitizing software that works with objects rather than raw stitches. Ink/Stitch (free, Inkscape-based), SewArt, Embrilliance, Hatch and Wilcom all qualify at different price points — we compare them in embroidery digitizing software.

    Even then, opening a DST in professional software gives you stitches, not the original objects. Serious changes still mean rebuilding the design.

    Keep the source file

    This is the part worth acting on. When you have a logo digitized, ask for the native working file as well as the DST — typically EMB (Wilcom), or the source from whatever software was used. That file contains the editable objects.

    With it, resizing and edits are straightforward. Without it, every change starts from scratch. Plenty of businesses discover this two years later when they need the logo bigger for jacket backs.
